To paint foam RC planes can add both to the looks of the RC plane and to how easy it is to get the orientation of the airplane up in the air. It adds to the feeling of flying the plane if it is not just a white or grey piece of foam floating in the air. Instead, using for example the colors of the Blue Angels on your F/A18 foam RC plane will make it look even more scale and realistic.
Paint foam RC planes with good result
When painting your foam RC plane you should of course paint it in the colors and patterns that you like the best. Using a real life color scheme for the real life airplane adds to the effect of scale and realism.
Also, consider using a color scheme that makes it easier for you to get the orientation of the airplane up in the air and far away from you. This is crucial in case of an emergency maneuver to save the plane out of a bad situation. One way of emphasizing what is up and down on the airplane is to paint stripes on the top of the wing and leaving the bottom blank. Alternatively, one stripe on the top and two stripes on the bottom will add considerably to the visual appearance of the airplane. Anything to make it easier to perceive the orientation from a distant at a critical moment will do.
Your plane will also get more personal if you have painted it in your color scheme of choice.
What paint to use for foam RC planes
Different types of foam can handle different kinds of paint. However, if you use a water-based acrylic it will be fail safe. Most craft paint will do the work for you.
To make sure that the paint is foam safe you should always try the paint, as a precaution, on a scrap piece of foam before applying it to you RC plane. The sound of melting foam is not a nice piece of music after a couple of hours of tracing out foam pieces and putting the RC plane together. The foam will actually start to melt if you use the wrong paint so make sure to use this advice!
To paint foam adds weight to your RC plane
If you have your foam RC plane on a diet you want to keep the amount of paint to a minimum since the paint adds weight. Personally I do not care too much about this since I seldom paint the whole airplane.
Paint foam RC planes – summary
- Make sure to use a foam safe paint, water based acrylics are suitable for most foam types
- Adds to the feeling of scale and realism
- Easier to perceive the RC planes orientation, even from a distance
- Gives your RC plane a personal touch
- If conscious about the airplanes weight, do not add to much paint
